For approximately the past 50 years, beginning with the popularity of the “Bridge on the River Kwai” book and movie, the quiet trading village of Kanchanaburi has been a major tourist attraction.
Not only the POW-related sites but the plethora of Buddhist temples and the access to Nature in the National Parks and waterways, brings thousands of tourists. One aspect that adds to the ‘domestic tourism’ is that Kanchanaburi is barely a 3-hour drive from the thriving metropolis of Bangkok, so it allows for easy day-trips to return to nature and perhaps learn a little history in the process.

There is also a group of young Thai men who explore the sections of the TBR; particularly those beyond Hellfire Pass and in the Thong Pha Poom area and in the edges of the Dam.
